Tallow Biodiesel Flow Meter Mass Flow Sizing Verification

Quick Answer: A Coriolis mass flow meter is almost always the right choice for tallow biodiesel. You need to know your mass flow range in kg/h, operating temperature, line pressure, and pipe size. Send these four values and we can verify the correct meter size within one business day.

Why Tallow Biodiesel Demands a Mass Flow Meter

Animal fat derived tallow is different from light distillates. It has high viscosity. It gels at room temperature. It can carry trace solids. A turbine meter clogs. An oval gear meter wears fast when solids are present. A differential pressure meter needs frequent recalibration when density varies batch to batch.

Silver Automation Instruments has supplied Coriolis meters for tallow transfer in Vietnam and Indonesia. The direct mass flow reading eliminates density compensation errors. You measure what you pay for. Another hard reality is heating. Tallow moves at 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. A meter without proper temperature compensation drifts. A Coriolis meter like our SLM series measures mass flow and density at actual process temperature. One meter does all three jobs.

The Four Numbers That Decide Meter Size

Most engineers skip this part and we see the results on customer sites every month. A meter sized on pipe diameter alone will underperform. The correct starting point is the mass flow range. A 2 inch line does not automatically need a DN50 meter. We verify sizing with these inputs.

1. Mass flow rate minimum and maximum in kg/h. Tallow biodiesel batch processes can swing from 200 kg/h to 8 000 kg/h. Tell us both ends. A meter that is oversized cannot resolve low flow. One that is undersized hits velocity limits and drops accuracy.

2. Operating temperature in degrees Celsius. Cold tallow at 45 degrees Celsius is viscous. At 85 degrees it flows easier. The meter material and process connection gaskets must tolerate the upper temperature. Standard meters use 316L stainless steel and PTFE. For tallow above 150 degrees Celsius we recommend all welded sensors and Hastelloy C22 options.

3. Line pressure in bar. Tallow transfer pumps often push at 5 to 10 bar. Higher pressure is not a problem for the meter body but the process connection rating matters. Standard flanges are PN40 or 150 lb. If your unloading line runs at 25 bar we select PN100 flanges.

4. Pipe diameter DN and connection type. We match the meter to your existing pipe or skid layout. Tri clamp connections are common in biodiesel plants. Flanged connection to ANSI or EN standards works for larger lines DN32 and above.

Viscosity and Pressure Drop Check

Tallow biodiesel viscosity typically sits between 10 and 40 cP at 60 degrees Celsius. Our application team runs a pressure drop calculation for your flow range. It is a simple check but it saves you pump energy and pipe stress. A DN25 Coriolis meter handling 1 500 kg/h of tallow at 20 cP will drop roughly 0.3 bar. A DN15 meter at the same flow will drop over 2.5 bar. That added back pressure can trip pump protections. We see this in batch blending systems all the time.

Because Coriolis meters have no moving parts in the flow stream the viscosity does not change measurement accuracy. The only variable that limits size is pressure drop across the sensor tubes. So we size the

meter for an acceptable pressure loss at maximum flow. In practice we target below 1 bar for transfer lines.

Real Case from Southeast Asia

Last year a biodiesel plant in Johor, Malaysia replaced three positive displacement meters with two SLM series Coriolis meters on their tallow receiving line. The plant unloads road tankers at 6 000 kg/h. Pipe size is DN40. They run tallow at 70 degrees Celsius and 4 bar. The original meter skip due to fat solids caused billing disputes with the feedstock supplier. After switching to a DN25 SLM mass flow meter the accuracy stays within ±0.15 percent of rate. The meter sends 4 to 20 mA HART signals to a Silver Instruments paperless recorder for audit trail. No more arguments at the weighbridge.

Two Outputs That Matter for Billing

Most biodiesel plants need mass flow and mass totalization. The SLM transmitter provides a pulse output for totalization and an analog 4 to 20 mA for rate. You can also use Modbus RTU to get mass flow, density, and temperature in one cable. A local display shows kg/h, total kg, and density in kg per cubic meter. This helps the operator verify tallow quality on the spot. If density drops suddenly it usually means water in the tallow condensate. That is a quick field check that has saved downstream catalyst poisoning for several of our customers.

Sizing Verification Steps We Take

When you send us the four basic parameters we return a sizing report. The report shows velocity through the sensor, pressure drop, and recommended meter model. Standard models cover DN2 up to DN200. For tallow biodiesel the sweet spot is usually DN15 to DN40. We list the accuracy curve, wetted material list, and a dimensional drawing. After you confirm the model we can ship within 5 working days from our stock in Australia or from the factory for exotic materials. Some distributors in the Middle East hold local stock for DN25 and DN40 meters because tallow biodiesel blending is growing fast there.

FAQ

Why not use oval gear meters for tallow biodiesel? Oval gear meters work for clean filtered oils but tallow carries solids and waxy particles. These particles jam the gears. Repair cost and downtime negate the lower purchase price. A Coriolis meter has a straight unobstructed flow path.

What accuracy can I expect? Mass flow accuracy is ±0.1 to ±0.15 percent of rate for liquids. Density accuracy is ±0.5 kg per cubic meter. Repeatability is better than ±0.05 percent. These numbers come from factory calibration with water that is traceable to national standards.

Do Coriolis meters need straight pipe runs? No. That is one big reason to choose them for crowded skids. You can mount the meter directly after an elbow or a pump discharge. No flow conditioning needed.

Can the meter handle cleaning in place or steam out? Yes. The standard SLM sensor is rated to 150 degrees Celsius. Steam cleaning at 130 degrees Celsius for short durations is fine. We recommend checking gasket compatibility with your cleaning chemical. Viton and PTFE are available.

What information do you need to give me a quote? Send us your minimum and maximum mass flow in kg/h, pipe diameter, temperature, and line pressure. Tell us if you need 4 to 20 mA HART, pulse, or Modbus output. We reply with a model number and price the same day. Our email is sales at silverinstruments dot com.
